Program Overview

Colorado GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a grant program that supports efforts to increase the number of students who obtain a high school diploma and prepare for and succeed in college. The program is funded through the U.S. Department of Education.

Colorado GEAR UP provides program services for students beginning in the 9th grade through the 1st year of college. Program services include:

  • Personalized mentoring
  • Academic advising
  • College and career readiness workshops
  • College visits
  • Summer programming, tutoring, and individualized assistance with the college admission process

Additional support may include access to:

  • Financial aid and financial literacy
  • Scholarships
  • Early remediation opportunities
  • Concurrent enrollment
  • Various test preparation resources

Upon high school graduation, Colorado GEAR UP participants who meet scholarship eligibility requirements may receive a scholarship to help fund their college education.

Program Conditions Agreement

To apply for the Colorado GEAR UP Program, the student and parent(s) or guardian(s) must agree to the Colorado GEAR UP Program Conditions and Agreement:

  1. Attendance: The student shall attend school classes and functions on a regular basis as outlined in the school’s attendance policy.
  2. School Policies: The student shall be a model citizen in and out of school and conduct themselves at all times in a manner that adheres to the school’s behavior policy and complies with the laws of the State of Colorado.
  3. Testing and Assessments: The student shall take all tests and assessments recommended by the Colorado GEAR UP program and make all scores and results available to the program.
  4. Data Sharing: By signing the Colorado GEAR UP Agreement, the student and parent(s) or guardian(s) understand and agree to grant permission to the Colorado GEAR UP Program to access school records and other related data for federal grant evaluation that complies with state law.
  5. Parent Engagement: Parent(s)/guardian(s) shall agree to participate in Colorado GEAR UP activities by assisting the student outside of the classroom, encouraging and supporting academic activities, and attending meetings and other GEAR UP events.
  6. Participation in Program Activities: The student agrees to participate in program activities, including but not limited to academically rigorous courses, college visits, college preparatory workshops, tutoring, and summer programming.

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility Requirements to Apply

To apply for the Colorado GEAR UP Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Receive a high school diploma from a Colorado GEAR UP high school.
  • Be eligible to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This includes:
    • Being a citizen or eligible noncitizen of the United States
    • Having a valid Social Security Number

Eligibility Requirements to Receive the Scholarship

To receive the Colorado GEAR UP Scholarship award, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be less than 22 years old at the time of the first scholarship award.
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an undergraduate program at an institution of higher education.
  • Complete all financial aid requirements as required by the institution attending.
